The 3rd "Ulupure Cup" Sichuan Provincial "Top Ten Amateur Go Players Tournament" and the 2024 National "Evening News Cup" Sichuan Ulupure Team Selection Tournament, hosted by the Sichuan Provincial Go Association, organized by the Sichuan Tianfu New Area Go Association, sponsored by Chengdu Ulupure Water Technology Group Co., Ltd., and supported by Sichuan Airlines Co., Ltd. and the Sichuan Tianfu New Area Internet Association, were held on March 2nd and 3rd at the Sichuan Tianfu New Area Go Association. Tang Xiaohong, 7-dan and Chairman of the Trade Union of Chengdu Ulupure Water Technology Group Co., Ltd., encouraged the players to showcase their skills and abilities, and wished the "Ulupure Cup" a complete success.
This was a major event for amateur Go players in Sichuan Province, attracting top players from across the province. After two days of intense competition, Jian Zhongfan 7-dan emerged victorious, winning the championship. Li Yanfeng 5-dan and Hao Yuepeng 6-dan won the runner-up and third place respectively. Cheng Shijiao 7-dan, Feng Yong 6-dan, Jiang Haoyu 6-dan, Chen Lu 6-dan, Yi Zhenyi 6-dan, Yang Haoran 6-dan, and Yang Jiong 5-dan finished 4th through 10th, earning them the title of the top ten in this year's Sichuan Provincial Amateur Go Top Ten Tournament. According to the competition rules, Li Yanfeng was promoted to 6-dan, and Yang Jiong received additional points for 6-dan. Since Li Yanfeng and Hao Yuepeng are both players from outside Sichuan, according to the competition regulations, Jian Zhongfan 7-dan, Li Yanfeng 6-dan, and 4th-place Cheng Shijiao 7-dan will represent the Sichuan Ulupure team in the "Evening News Cup," the highest-level national amateur Go competition, at the end of March. Cai Heng 7-dan, director of the Sichuan Provincial Go Association and chief referee of the competition, and others presented trophies, certificates, and prize money to the top ten players.
This competition is a grand contest among top amateur Go players of all ages in our province, characterized by the following:
1. High Standards, Intense Competition, and Heavy Responsibility. The competition has a registration limit of 64 participants, with only players of 5 dan or higher eligible to register. There are 2 7 dan players, 19 6 dan players, 43 5 dan players, and more than 10 reserve players who haven't yet registered. Spectators commented that almost every well-known amateur Go player in Sichuan is participating, making this a veritable feast for the Go community. The level is incredibly high, and the matches will be fiercely contested. The three winners will represent the highest level of amateur Go players in Sichuan in the highest-level national amateur Go tournament, carrying a heavy responsibility.
2. Wide Age Range. This competition not only featured seasoned veterans but also rising stars and energetic young players. Even more valuable was the emergence of a group of promising young players. Represented by Yang Haoran, these young players already possess the ability to compete with top players, having fought their way into the top ten. These young players have a bright future and are the rising stars of Sichuan Go.
3. Unexpected Events Abounded. In the intense battle, both sides initially held the advantage, only to make a crucial mistake and suffer a heartbreaking defeat, leaving them deeply disappointed and frustrated. Some players, believing they had lost, remained bewildered even after the referee declared them winners, unable to believe they had truly won.
4. A Series of Surprises. Li Yanfeng, from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, won second place and, according to the rules, successfully advanced to 6-dan. When asked if he was surprised, he repeatedly said he was too surprised and could hardly believe it. He hadn't been able to register beforehand due to full capacity and only participated as a substitute two days before the competition. He never expected such a pleasant surprise and was grateful to participate in such a fair and high-level competition. As a university student from out of town studying in Chengdu, he would strive to contribute more to the Go community in Sichuan Province.
5. Persistence and Passion. Only by being there in person can one truly understand why these top players from all over the province were willing to travel long distances to participate, like a martial arts competition, exchanging skills and enjoying the process immensely.
"Putting one's mind on small gains can jeopardize one's grand strategy." Go emphasizes holistic thinking, overall perspective, and the essence of things. It is not about fleeting moments but about the enduring flow of time. Under the guidance of the relevant administrative authorities and provincial and municipal Go associations, the Sichuan Tianfu New Area Go Association will take the inheritance and promotion of Go as its mission, using Go to educate people, enlighten their minds, and cultivate their character.
