    Current Status of my country's Ultrafiltration Membrane Market


    In the past two to three years, with the increasing severity of water pollution due to industrial development, the requirements for water pretreatment have become increasingly stringent. As the most effective water pretreatment method to date, ultrafiltration membranes have begun to experience rapid growth in the domestic market.


    Compared to the strong market share of reverse osmosis membranes, ultrafiltration membranes have not yet achieved significant dominance. There are over 30 institutions and universities in my country engaged in membrane research and development, and approximately 300 companies engaged in membrane production. In total membrane sales, reverse osmosis membranes account for 50% of the market, ultrafiltration, microfiltration, and electrodialysis each account for 10%, and the remaining 20% is occupied by gas separation membranes, inorganic ceramic membranes, permeable membranes, and other types. Although its market share is not very high, ultrafiltration membranes have begun to double in growth in the past two to three years, entering a critical period of development. The main reason why ultrafiltration did not develop on a large scale before was its high price and operating costs. However, with industrial development and the increasing severity of water pollution, the requirements for water pretreatment are becoming more stringent, and more and more companies are choosing ultrafiltration for pretreatment. This is not only because ultrafiltration is currently the most effective method for water pretreatment, but also because ultrafiltration is the best way to ensure the proper operation of a reverse osmosis system. Currently, many reverse osmosis systems experience problems primarily due to inadequate water pretreatment, which fails to guarantee the system's normal operation. Therefore, even though ultrafiltration membranes are more expensive, an increasing number of companies are choosing ultrafiltration for pretreatment, achieving a one-time solution.


    In the domestic ultrafiltration market, Koch ultrafiltration membranes hold a leading position. However, unlike the reverse osmosis membrane market, which is dominated by the two giants Hydranautics and Dow, the current ultrafiltration market is not yet monopolized. Domestic ultrafiltration membrane products compete to a certain extent, and their quality is significantly better than that of reverse osmosis products. While foreign ultrafiltration membranes are also of good quality, their application is lower than that of domestic membranes, mainly because domestic membranes have a price advantage. The current market structure is such that several well-known foreign brands, represented by Koch, dominate the high-end market in China, while the mid-to-low-end market is divided among numerous domestic ultrafiltration manufacturers. Representative companies include Tianjin's Membrane Technology, Dalian's Ouke, and Hainan's Lifesense. Domestic ultrafiltration companies are now developing rapidly, with companies producing ultrafiltration membranes found in almost every province and city. However, the quality of their membrane products is generally average, insufficient to form a monopoly. It can be said that the domestic water treatment ultrafiltration market is currently in a period of fierce competition, characterized by the following features:


    1. Numerous ultrafiltration membrane brands, with significant differences in product quality and price.


    2. There are no unified and mature standards or experiences in differentiating ultrafiltration membrane quality and segmenting application markets in China, making it difficult to definitively say which products are superior.


    3. Strong market demand for ultrafiltration membranes, coupled with users' lack of experience in selecting membranes, means that various brands have the potential to gain a foothold in the current market.


    Of course, the current chaotic competitive landscape of the domestic ultrafiltration market will not last long. Excellent brands and strong companies will eventually stand out over time. Due to limitations in raw material quality, manufacturing capabilities, and packaging technology, the performance of most domestically produced ultrafiltration membranes still lags significantly behind foreign products. Without long-term support from national policies and large corporations, a qualitative leap is unlikely in the short term.


    Ultrafiltration Membrane Products and Companies


    In terms of product form, ultrafiltration membranes are divided into spiral wound, plate and frame, tubular, and hollow fiber types. Among these, hollow fiber is the most widely used in China. The biggest difference between ultrafiltration membranes and reverse osmosis membranes is their non-interchangeability. Ultrafiltration membranes from different brands are essentially not interchangeable, which inherently increases the risk for ultrafiltration membrane users. Mistakes in choosing the right brand and application of ultrafiltration membranes can have significant consequences for users and negatively impact manufacturers. Therefore, for the industrialization of hollow fiber membrane technology, the main focus should be on developing highly anti-fouling membranes that meet market demands and reduce the risk to users' and companies' reputations. Currently, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is internationally recognized by the engineering and academic communities as a highly fouling-resistant membrane material. Only a few developed countries have mature PVDF technology, such as Koch Industries in the US, Toray Industries in Japan, and ZENOE in Canada.     Abroad, ultrafiltration is mainly used in drinking water treatment, while in my country it is mainly used for industrial wastewater reuse as a pretreatment for reverse osmosis.


    Currently, in the domestic water industry market, ultrafiltration technology has been widely applied in the treatment of industrial wastewater in power, steel, and chemical industries. With economic and social development, large-scale wastewater treatment projects will increase, opening up a vast market space for ultrafiltration membrane technology. Currently, many water plants abroad are already using ultrafiltration technology to produce tap water, but in China, due to funding and other issues, its application has not yet been widespread. However, with the revision of national and local drinking water standards and the introduction of new regulations, ultrafiltration technology will inevitably be adopted by more and more waterworks. According to the Ministry of Water Resources' analysis in "China's Water Supply and Demand in the 21st Century," my country will enter a period of severe water shortage after 2010, and water pollution will gradually become the biggest obstacle to safe urban water supply. Urban sewage treatment and reclaimed water reuse will become one of the effective ways to solve the future urban water resource crisis. Therefore, ultrafiltration membranes will have a broad market space in the future municipal sewage treatment market. In short, as people pay more and more attention to the living environment and drinking water safety, it can be predicted that ultrafiltration technology will be widely used in my country's future municipal water treatment and drinking water treatment markets.
