How to Distinguish Between Reverse Osmosis Water Purifiers and Ultrafiltration Water Purifiers

Table of Content [Hide]

Water dispensers in appliance stores are usually clearly labeled with their type, making it easy to identify whether they are reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers or ultrafiltration (UF) water purifiers. However, if you want to distinguish the type of water dispenser yourself like an expert, here are a few methods:

    1. Observe the water production and discharge rates. Generally, the pure water flow rate of a reverse osmosis water purifier is lower than the discharge rate; while an ultrafiltration water purifier only produces water, or the production water flow rate is significantly higher than the concentrated water flow rate.

    2. Use instruments for testing. TDS test: The TDS value of the produced water from an ultrafiltration home water purifier is basically the same as the TDS value of the incoming water; while the TDS value of the produced water from a reverse osmosis water purifier is much lower than the TDS value of the incoming water. Hardness test: When testing the produced water of an ultrafiltration home water purifier with a hardness meter, the reagent solution will change color, while the reagent solution of reverse osmosis water will not change color. You can distinguish between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis water purifiers by whether the hardness reagent solution changes color. 3. Simple Tests.

Method 1: Take a cup of hot water, chop some soap and put it in. If the soap dissolves completely and cools to become a translucent liquid (or a solid state if there's a lot of soap), it's a reverse osmosis water purifier. If a layer of undissolved white foam appears on the surface after cooling, it's an ultrafiltration membrane water purifier.

Method 2: You can also heat a beaker. If it leaves a lot of limescale on the beaker wall, it's an ultrafiltration membrane water purifier; if there's no limescale, it's a reverse osmosis water purifier. This method is suitable for high-hardness water sources.
