The Influence of Particle Size and Uniformity of Ion Exchange Resins on Water Treatment

    The size of resin particles has a significant impact on water treatment processes. Overly large particles slow down the exchange rate, while overly small particles increase pressure loss as water passes through the resin layer. The resin particle size should be uniform; otherwise, small particles will clog the pores between larger particles, leading to uneven water flow and increased resistance. Furthermore, uneven particle size makes backwashing difficult to control; an excessively high backwash flow rate will wash away small resin particles, while an insufficient flow rate will fail to loosen large particles, resulting in poor backwashing effectiveness. Generally, a resin particle size of 20-40 mesh (0.3-1.2 mm) is suitable for water treatment. In high-flow-rate devices, a narrower particle size range, approximately 0.45-0.65 mm, is required to reduce fluid resistance and ensure more consistent pressure resistance of the resin particles.
