    Subject Matter and Scope


    This standard specifies a potentiometric titration method for the determination of anionic detergents in polluted water.


    This standard uses sodium linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (hereinafter referred to as LAS) as the standard, with an average alkyl carbon chain number of 12 and an average molecular weight of 344.4.


    This standard is applicable to the determination of anionic detergents in polluted water.


    Limits of Detection and Upper Limits of Detection in this Standard


    When the titrant cetylpyridine bromide (hereinafter referred to as CPB) has a titer of 0.12 mg/L, its limit of detection is 5 mg/L, and its upper limit of detection is 24 mg/L. The upper limit of detection can be increased by appropriate dilution of the water sample.


    Interferences


    Cations present in the sample that can form ion-pairs with LAS that are more stable than the ion-pairs of CPB and LAS interfere with the determination, producing a negative error; anions that can form ion-pairs with CPB that are more stable than LAS interfere with the determination, producing a positive error.
