The regeneration of a fully automatic water softener can be initiated based on time or flow rate. The working process of a water softener generally consists of the following cyclical steps:
A. Operation (Work)
Under a certain pressure (0.2-0.6 MPa) and flow rate, raw water passes through the controller valve chamber and enters the container (resin tank) containing ion exchange resin. The Na+ contained in the resin exchanges with the cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, etc.) in the water, so that the Ca2+ and Mg2+ ion content of the water exiting the container reaches the predetermined requirements, thus achieving the softening of hard water.
B. Backwash
After the resin becomes ineffective, before regeneration, it is backwashed with water from bottom to top. Backwashing serves two purposes: first, it loosens the compacted resin layer during operation, facilitating better contact between resin particles and the regenerator; second, it removes suspended solids and broken resin particles accumulated on the resin surface with the backwash water, preventing the exchanger's flow resistance from increasing.
C. Regeneration Brine Absorption
Regeneration brine, at a specific concentration and flow rate, flows through the exhausted resin layer, restoring its original exchange capacity.
D. Displacement (Slow Cleaning)
After the regenerator has finished flowing, some unregenerated brine remains in the exchanger. This is cleaned with clean water at a flow rate less than or equal to the regenerator flow rate (slow cleaning) to fully utilize the regeneration effect of the brine and reduce the load on the forward cleaning.
E. Forward Cleaning (Fast Cleaning)
The purpose is to remove residual regeneration waste liquid from the resin layer. Cleaning is typically performed at a normal flow rate until the effluent meets quality standards.
F. Regenerator Tank Filling
The amount of water required for one regeneration cycle is injected into the regenerator tank.
