Over long-term use, the performance of resins gradually declines, resulting in a decrease in the quality of the effluent (i.e., the product). The factors affecting resin performance degradation are complex, including reduced resin volume, decreased exchange capacity, increased particle cracking, and breakage and loss. The causes of these phenomena are primarily:
(1) Uneven internal stress due to swelling and contraction. During use, uneven swelling and contraction within the resin cause stress imbalance in local structures, leading to chain breakage and degradation.
(2) Oxidative damage. Oxidizing agents in the system, including acids, alkalis, and solvents, damage the resin skeleton and functional groups.
(3) Impurity contamination. Impurities in the water clog the internal pores of the resin, hindering exchange and adsorption.
