Ultrapure Water Technology: Total Exchange Capacity of Ion Exchange Resins

Table of Content [Hide]

Exchange capacity is the most important performance indicator of ion exchange resins and is crucial data for designing ion exchange processes. It represents the resin's exchange capacity, i.e., the amount of ions exchanged. Generally, exchange capacity refers to the number of exchangeable ions carried by a given mass or volume of ion exchange resin, which depends on the number of active groups in the resin's network structure. Since the exchange capacity of ion exchange resins often changes with different ion exchange reaction conditions, it can be further divided into total exchange capacity, working exchange capacity, equilibrium exchange capacity, and regeneration exchange capacity.

    Total Exchange Capacity

Total exchange capacity refers to the exchange capacity when all exchangeable ions in the exchange groups of the ion exchange resin are exchangeable. Its value equals the ratio of anions to cations in the exchange groups. It depends on the internal structure of the ion exchange resin and is independent of external solution conditions; it is a fixed constant. Total exchange capacity reflects the chemical structural characteristics of the ion exchange resin and plays an important role in experimental research. In practical applications, working exchange capacity is usually more convenient. There is no direct ratio between total exchange capacity and working exchange capacity; therefore, working exchange capacity cannot be derived from total exchange capacity.
