Imports of Medical Equipment Declined for the First Time in Three Years

Medical equipment is one of Ningbo's main imported electromechanical products, with an annual import volume of nearly US$250 million. However, this year, a downward trend has begun. Statistics show that from January to August this year, the Ningbo Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau completed inspections of 313 batches of imported medical equipment, valued at US$66.61 million, representing decreases of 39.1% and 44.9% respectively compared to the same period last year. This is the first decline in Ningbo's electromechanical product imports in nearly three years, and the drop is significant.

Ningbo's medical equipment imports had been growing rapidly for many years. This sharp decline is mainly due to three factors: Firstly, in terms of policy guidance, my country has begun to vigorously promote the upgrading of the domestic medical equipment industry, gradually initiating the selection process for domestically produced medical equipment, which has a significant impact on end-users and procurement. Secondly, in terms of technology, there are currently nearly 200,000 medical device manufacturers in China, which previously focused mainly on the low-to-mid-end market. However, with technological advancements, the monopoly of foreign companies in the high-end market is gradually being broken. Thirdly, the slowdown in domestic economic development has led to more cautious domestic investment, slowing down the pace of procurement of high-end foreign medical equipment.
