In winter, the drop in temperature will cause a certain decrease in the production capacity of ultrapure water systems. Since water viscosity is affected by temperature, the production capacity of reverse osmosis membranes will decrease significantly. In addition, due to the reduced production capacity, the wastewater flow rate will increase accordingly, leading to a higher wastewater ratio. Once the temperature rises, wastewater will decrease, and production capacity will increase. So, how should we maintain ultrapure water systems in winter?

    I. Operating Environment and Conditions for Ultrapure Water Systems

The operating temperature of ultrapure water systems is 5~45°C, with 25°C being the most suitable operating temperature. When the ambient temperature is below 5°C, please turn on heating or air conditioning in time and take antifreeze measures. When the ambient temperature is below 0°C, please turn off the ultrapure water system immediately and turn it on again after the temperature rises and you check the condition of the filter cartridges. When the temperature is below 0°C, please open the outer shell of each filter cartridge and drain all residual water. Before restarting, you must check again whether the filter cartridges are frozen. If frozen, please place the filter cartridges in a high-temperature environment to thaw before use.

II. Storage of Ultrapure Water Filter Cartridges

Even in cold winters, ultrapure water systems should be installed and used away from light. If there is a need to temporarily stop using the system, please disconnect the water and power supply, drain the water from the ultrapure water system, and insulate the ultrapure water system with foam or similar materials when the room temperature is low. Newly purchased pretreatment filter cartridges should be stored away from light and moisture, while reverse osmosis membranes and purification columns should be refrigerated. If the ultrapure water system is planned to be shut down for an extended period, please drain the remaining water from the system, remove the purification column, seal it, and refrigerate it.

III. Troubleshooting for Ultrapure Water Systems

If the ultrapure water system freezes, cracks, or leaks, do not panic. Carefully inspect the leaking area, check for cracks or deformation of the components, and replace the corresponding parts promptly. If the ultrapure water system freezes, place it in an environment with a room temperature above 10°C to thaw naturally for 48 hours before turning it on for normal use. After turning it on, thoroughly check the ultrapure water system for leaks and changes in water quality and quantity. If unopened reverse osmosis membranes and purification columns are found to be frozen, place them, along with their packaging, in cold water and soak them for at least 24 hours before use. When the ultrapure water system displays abnormalities, first check for leaks, and then replace the corresponding parts and consumables as needed.
