Currently, there are two methods for removing iron using natural manganese ore: one is through the action of an activated filter membrane, where the surface of the manganese sand has a strong oxidizing effect. The second method involves the manganese sand itself catalyzing iron, converting ferrous iron (Fe2+) in water to ferric iron (Fe3+), which then adheres to the surface of the manganese sand particles, thus achieving iron removal. Natural manganese dioxide oxidizes ferrous iron in water to ferric iron, precipitating it out and purifying the water. Manganese dioxide dissolves in water and is oxidized to ferric oxide (Fe7+), which then oxidizes ferrous iron in the water back to ferric iron. The iron removal capacity of natural manganese oxide sand depends not only on the form and chemical properties of manganese but also on its crystal structure. Experiments by research departments and practical applications have proven that processing manganese sand from natural manganese ore yields the best iron removal effect. It is commonly used in drinking water filtration systems for iron and manganese removal.
