During the centralized application period for the 2017 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects, NSFC-affiliated institutions submitted a total of 190,871 applications. 31 applications were rejected due to reasons such as late submissions or missing electronic versions, resulting in 190,840 applications being received.
The statistics for the 2017 NSFC applications are as follows:
The number of applications in 2017 increased by 17,997 compared to the same period in 2016, representing a growth rate of 10.41%. Seven types of projects saw growth rates exceeding 10.0%. The number of applications for general projects increased by 6,243, a rise of 8.43%; key projects increased by 230, a rise of 8.27%; the number of applications for the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for young scientists increased by 7,796, a rise of 11.07%; regional science foundation projects increased by 1,779, a rise of 12.57%; the number of applications for the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Outstanding Young Scientists increased by 454, a rise of 10.29%; the number of applications for the National Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars increased by 251, a rise of 10.32%; the number of applications for the Overseas and Hong Kong and Macao Scholars Collaborative Research Fund increased by 25, a rise of 6.48%; the number of applications for international (regional) collaborative research and exchange projects increased by 150, a rise of 17.65%; and the number of applications for the National Major Scientific Instruments Development Project (free application) increased by 2, a rise of 0.34%. In addition, some joint fund projects, major projects, and major research plan projects were also accepted during the concentrated application period. Among them, there were 3,303 applications for joint fund projects, 30 applications for major projects, and 208 applications for major research plans.
