Economical and Efficient Three-Channel High-Flux Reverse Osmosis Technology

    The inventors at DesalNATE have developed a new reverse osmosis technology using Koch's 18-inch giant membrane elements, replacing standard 8-inch elements and eliminating the traditional concentrate seal between the membrane elements and the pressure vessel. DesalNATE's design features three flow channels, with the feed water to each membrane element circulating within the pressure vessel.


    This three-flow-channel system and large-diameter membrane element design are more efficient and cost-effective than traditional reverse osmosis processes. Using DesalNATE technology can increase permeate flow rate by four times, reduce investment costs by 25% for small systems, and by 30% for large systems. The third feed bypass reduces energy consumption and operating costs by 6-15%. Membrane life and maintenance costs are also reduced.


    Feed water is introduced from the membrane element connection points, reducing pressure loss and increasing efficiency. Because there are no seals between membrane elements, the feed water supplied to each element is not concentrated, resulting in higher quality permeate. Furthermore, the absence of high-concentration brine on the membrane surface leads to better concentration polarization than traditional reverse osmosis, resulting in less membrane fouling and allowing for lower flow rates.


    DesalNATE's 18-inch diameter pressure vessels, constructed from fiberglass composite materials, can reach lengths of up to 36 feet. Each vessel can accommodate six membranes and produce 240,000 gallons of high-quality drinking water daily from any brackish water source. The company expects this technology to extend membrane element lifespan to seven years.


    DesalNATE's main products include a range of inexpensive complete units and unit systems. The company designs and manufactures electrically powered, horizontally mounted membrane unit moving platforms. Complete units include feed booster pumps, pressure tubing, membranes, and control cabinets.


    DesalNATE's components are also designed for use in reverse osmosis pretreatment processes such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration. The company also integrates pumps and energy recovery units, significantly reducing system energy consumption.


    The company built a demonstration unit in Oxnard as part of a California groundwater restoration, enhancement, and treatment project.
