Suspended solids, precipitates, algae, and other microorganisms can be removed by filtering the sample during or shortly after sampling using filter paper, filter membranes, sand core funnels, glass fibers, or by centrifugation.
During analysis, the main purpose of filtration is to distinguish between filterable and non-filterable states. When selecting a filter, potential adsorption losses must be considered. For example, sand core funnels and glass fiber filters are generally used for measuring organic substances, while 0.45 μm filter membranes are commonly used for measuring inorganic substances.
