History of Ion Exchange Resin Development

Ion exchangers are substances capable of ion exchange, classified into inorganic ion exchangers (such as zeolites) and organic ion exchangers. Organic ion exchangers are also known as ion exchange resins.

During World War II, the United States obtained patents for the synthesis of styrene-based and acrylic-based addition-polymer ion exchange resins, which were chemically and physically more stable and economical than condensation-type ion exchange resins. This laid the foundation for today's ion exchange resin manufacturing methods.

my country began research on ion exchange resins after 1950, and in 1958, ion exchange resins were officially put into industrial production domestically. Currently, my country produces more than 60 varieties of ion exchange resins, with continuously improving quality, playing an important role in my country's economic development.

    Composition of Ion Exchange Resins

Ion exchange resins are a class of high-molecular-weight compounds with a network structure containing functional groups. Their structure consists of three parts: an insoluble three-dimensional network framework, functional groups attached to the framework, and exchangeable ions with opposite charges carried by the functional groups.

    Classification of Ion Exchange Resins

Based on their skeletal structure, ion exchange resins can be divided into two main categories: gel-type and macroporous-type.

Based on the characteristics of their exchange functional groups, they can be divided into cation exchange resins, anion exchange resins, and other resins.

Based on the strength of the acid or base on the functional groups, they can be divided into strong acid cation exchange resins, weak acid cation exchange resins; strong base anion exchange resins, and weak base anion exchange resins.
